What are property deeds?
Property deeds are documents that record ownership and legal interests in land. For most registered property in England and Wales, the current position is recorded by HM Land Registry in the title register and title plan.
Older transfers, leases and other deeds may also be referred to in the register. Copies of these separate documents are not always held or available.
What information can property records contain?
Depending on the property and the document, records may include:
- ownership and the registered proprietors
- a description of the property
- rights of way
- restrictions and covenants
- mortgages and charges
- leasehold details and references to leases
Not every record contains all of these details. For legal interpretation or a boundary dispute, consider professional advice.
Which document do I need?
The title register and title plan describe the registered title. Other documents depend on what has been filed and is available.
